PPD Testing
Service Description
The PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) skin test is a diagnostic tool used to detect tuberculosis (TB) infection. The test involves injecting a small amount of PPD antigen into the skin, usually on the forearm, to stimulate an immune response. The PPD testing function is to: 1. Determine if an individual has been infected with TB bacteria 2. Identify individuals who are at high risk of developing active TB disease 3. Screen individuals who work in healthcare, have been exposed to someone with TB, or have a weakened immune system The test results are measured by the size of the induration (hardening) or swelling that occurs at the injection site. A positive reaction, typically indicated by a swelling of 10mm or larger, suggests that the individual has been infected with TB bacteria.
